It's not hard being a food cricket! Our main goal is to help introduce people to some of the best independent and local restaurants, in order to get them away from the big chains. Food should be fun, unique and delicious, and that is what we are after!

National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum!

Today is the Golden Globe Awards so we thought we would celebrate with the closest thing you can find in Oklahoma. The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in OKC has its own awards for cowboy actors and actresses that it holds annually. You can see props and costumes from many of these stars. However, this museum has so much more: Western art, historic Cowboy artifacts, Native American artifacts and replica houses, a Hall of Fame for rodeo cowboys and animals and a replica old west town. So much to see and do. So mosey on down and take a gander!

Smokin’ Joe’s Rib Ranch!

In honor of National Strawberry Day, why not spotlight one of our favorite Oklahoma BBQ restaurants, Smokin’ Joe’s in Davis? Smokin’ Joe’s has some amazing barbecue in a cool location. What does this have to do with strawberries? Simple. One of the things Joe’s is known for is Strawberries on a Cloud, which is Heaven. It defies explanation so just go try it!

Game HQ!

In honor of National Trading Card Day, we felt we should highlight the best board and card game shop in Oklahoma, Game HQ in Oklahoma City. They have a huge store full of hundreds of games, cards and miniatures. The staff here is awesome and they have a large area set aside to actually play the games. Game on!

El Toro!

In honor of National Margarita Day, we have decided to spotlight a place with really tasty, surprisingly strong, and surprisingly cheap margaritas, El Toro in Muldrow! El Toro does not look like much from the outside, but inside is a fantastic Mexican restaurant with some very creative ideas and some really yummy dishes. And of course the margaritas come in multiple flavors for a cheap price. So go already!

Tower Cafe and Cinnamon Roll Bakery!

Today is National Sticky Bun Day, so why not celebrate with some of the most famous cinnamon rolls in the state? Head over to Okarche and grab a bite at the Tower Cafe. It is an Oklahoma institution and no meal there is complete without their amazing cinnamon rolls! Make sure to grab one (or a dozen).

Giuseppe's Italian Dining

It's Drink Wine Day! So, why not go to a place with a wine cellar within an old bank vault (so you know it's protected.) That place is Giuseppe's Italian Dining in Marlow. The wine is local and abundant and the Italian food is top-notch here too. So why not do yourself a favor and go try it?

Café Bahnhof!

In honor of National Cabbage Day, we want to spotlight a hidden gem in the tiny town of Waynoka. Cafe Bahnhof is some serious authentic German cuisine. Their sauerkraut is delicious and the rest of the food is just as good. But, be warned. They are only open three nights a week and can get pretty busy, so make sure to get a reservation. You won't be disappointed!

Cajun King!

It's Fat Tuesday, so why not celebrate with a taste of New Orleans in Warr Acres? Cajun King is the best Cajun food you will find outside of New Orleans and the decor is even Mardi Gras themed. The staff is awesome and the food is better, so why not swing by?

Cherokee Strip Museum!

In honor of Presidents' Day, we decided today would be perfect for the Cherokee Strip Museum! It contains a Hall of Presidents and a room dedicated to the 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, but it contains so much more. Housed in an old hospital, the atmosphere here is unique, to say the least. The rooms contain artifacts from local residents and businesses, hospital equipment, artifacts from the land run, creepy dolls, antiques, and memorabilia from the POW camp located here in World War II. Do yourself a favor and check this fantastic museum out!

White Dog Hill!

Happy Valentine's Day! In honor of today, we decided to highlight our favorite date night restaurant in Oklahoma, White Dog Hill in Clinton! White Dog Hill has everything you need for the perfect night out. Fancy atmosphere? Check. Beautiful views? Check. Low Lighting? Check. Good, high class food? Definitely a check. Their menu changes weekly, so you never know exactly what they have at any given time, but you know it will be homemade and awesome. So, take that special someone on a road trip down Route 66 to Clinton and have a wonderful, romantic dinner at White Dog Hill!

Chow's Chinese!

It's Chinese New Year Today, so what better place to go than Oklahoma City's Asian District? And while you're there, you're bound to get hungry. So, why not stop in at Chow's? Chow's is some of the best and most authentic Chinese food you will find in Oklahoma. The service is great, the décor is awesome and the food is spectacular. What better way to ring in the new year?

Science Museum Oklahoma!

Today is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and what better way to help foster and nurture a girl's (or boy's or whatever) love of science than by taking them to Science Museum Oklahoma. The Science Museum contains so much within one building. They have plenty of hands on experiments to help explain scientific principles, a garden, a gallery of planes and trains, a museum of classic bicycles, a hall of illusions, space memorabilia, and a room full of giant versions of board games. There is easily enough to do here to keep anyone busy all day. Get out, have fun and maybe learn something!

Great Salt Plains State Park!

In honor of National Umbrella Day is a place where an umbrella is most helpful, Great Salt Plains State Park! Great Salt Plains in Jet is a beautiful park with vast expanses of white, shining plains formed from ancient sea beds. The sun here can be pretty relentless, hence the umbrella. The main draw of this park is a section where you are free to dig for and keep selenite crystals. These crystals are unique in that they have an hourglass pattern that is found nowhere else in the world. So make sure you bring your digging tools when you come!

Savastano's Pizzeria!

Buongiorno! In honor of National Pizza Day, we want to spotlight one of the best pizza places in Oklahoma, Savastano's in Bixby! Savastano's has legitimate connections to Chicago and they bring that Chicago style to the Tulsa area. The pizzas are so thick and deep that one or two pieces are normally enough to fill you up. The toppings are simple, but we heartily endorse the Italian sausage and the spinach pizza. They also have thin crust, subs and hot dogs. Oh, and they have one of the best salad bars in town.

Martin Park!

In honor of National Boy Scout Day, we are going to spotlight Martin Park in Oklahoma City today. Martin Park is a welcome slice of nature in the midst of the city. It has multiple hiking trails allowing you to see different habitats and maybe see different wildlife. It is a fun, not too challenging, place to get some fresh air and exercise without having to leave the city.

Flattire Burgers!

In honor of the big game today, we want to talk about where we watched the Super Bowl last year, Flattire Burgers in Edmond. Flattire has a really awesome selection of unique burgers, some really crazy desserts, plenty of alcoholic selections, and a lot of TVs everywhere you look. In short, a perfect game day restaurant. Do yourself a favor and have a good time at Flattire!

Show Your Support!

Today seems like a good day to draw attention to our goal for Food Crickets. Far too many small businesses, including many restaurants, have been having a rough time since the COVID pandemic began last year. Now more than ever, we need to shop and eat local. If you patronize a small business, the money stays local. If you shop and eat at chains, eventually that money ends up in the pockets of a corporation, and that is something no one should want. Do yourself a favor and break free from the chains and explore and experiment with small, local businesses. In our experience, these are always so much more interesting, fun and, really, just better overall. No matter where you happen to be, try out some new local places. Our website and our book will help to guide you to some of the places we recommend, but there is no need to stop there. Try something new, you're bound to enjoy it.

Pinkitzel!

Today is World Nutella Day and National Bubble Gum Day, so today's choice better be something sweet! Luckily, Edmond happens to have the perfect option. Pinkitzel is a cupcake and candy shop with some of the most unique and delicious cupcakes around. They also have a generous selection of candies. Pinkitzel is even pinker and girlier than it sounds, but don't let that scare any of you guys away. These cupcakes are probably the best in Oklahoma!

Gloss Mountain!

To show you Food Crickets does more than food, today I would like to write about Gloss Mountain. Gloss Mountain is a state park to the west of Enid and contains, true to the name, a mountain covered in shiny selenite. The climb up the mountain is fairly easy and has steps. The view from up top is phenomenal and allows you to see all the beauty of Red Carpet Country. There are also animals to be seen here as we saw plenty of vultures and a Mountain Boomer, the state reptile of Oklahoma. Here is a picture of the little guy.

Café Alley!

Welcome back! Today is National Carrot Cake Day, and if you're going to eat carrot cake, why not eat the best? And in our opinion, the best carrot cake is down in Ardmore at Café Alley. They have delicious and unique food here, but the star of the show is their carrot cake. It is a huge brick of cake and is so sweet and delicious, it blows away any other carrot cake you have ever eaten. So do yourself a favor and eat more carrot cake!

Eischen's Bar!

In honor of Groundhog Day, we are taking a little trip through time to the oldest bar in Oklahoma, Eischen's Bar! Eischen's is in the little town of Okarche to the north and west of OKC. Eischen's is known for its amazing fried chicken (some of the best in OK) and the fried okra is no slouch. The food here comes in huge portions for a cheap price. While the menu is incredibly small, it does contain everything you need. So do yourself a favor and head back in time to Eischen's!

Sam & Ella's Chicken Palace!

Seeing as today is my birthday, I thought I would write about one of my favorite restaurants in Oklahoma, Sam & Ella's Chicken Palace. Despite what the name might imply, this is a pizza place. They only have a few specialty pizzas, but their pizza is unlike anything else you will find in Oklahoma. The crust is different and the sauce and toppings are just overloaded. Do yourself a favor and get a Big Sloppy Pie. It truly lives up to its name, but their is so much pepperoni and black olives (which is a personal favorite pizza combination) that it is almost unreal. Oh, and if you are looking for the chicken in the name, look no further than the decor. Everything here is chickens. So, next time you're down in Tahlequah, why not stop in at the best restaurant in town? Trust us!
